Course Summary

An expansive masterclass begins with an italic script, where your instructor emphasises precise form and encourages rhythmic performance. Later, we'll investigate methods of increasing freedom, before "polyrhythmic calligraphy" is introduced. That is expressive calligraphy with more than one rhythmic element for artistic application. Ultimately, a module on layering shows how polyrhythmic calligraphy applied in overlapping layers may further increase rhythmic complexity.
The program combines advanced calligraphy training along with fundamental knowledge. Primarily for intermediate and advanced level calligraphers, those with less experience may find it inspiring as long as they realise some content will remain beyond their level for now. All levels may find this a healthy view to keep.
I demonstrate pen techniques in detail. I didn't learn them overnight—it will take serious students time to absorb the content into their practice. Nonetheless, inspiration and learning may begin immediately. Those lacking time to commit to regular practice may still find the program informative and inspiring.

About your Instructor

Denis is internationally renowned as a leading figure in Western calligraphy. Continual development over 35 years followed his full-time education in calligraphy. A master of the broad pen in both traditional and uniquely individual experimental styles, his media include calfskin vellum, paper, glass and film. His works have a unique beauty that is more than skin deep and are occasionally provocative. Denis has taught at the invitation of calligraphy guilds internationally since he was 20 years old and is known for his clarity of explanation in teaching. Also at 20, he was elected as the youngest Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators while working on The Great Book of Ireland from his studio in Dublin. He has rare tech prowess for a craftsman—his films are professionally produced and artistically presented.
